Total Tax vs Total Payments on Fed and State level

My TurboTax Deluxe shows short summary of my Federal and NY State in two separate widgets at the top of the screen: "Federal Tax Due" and "NY Tax Due"

When you mouse over these widgets it gives you a short breakdown on payments and tax total.

The issue is:

Federal widget shows "Total Tax" value greater than "Total Payments" - which means that I owe some taxes and need to pay, fine.

But the NY State widget shows a similar pair of fields as "Total New York State Tax" lower than corresponding "Total Payments and Credits" - which SHOULD mean that NY owes me money back, BUT for some reason TurboTax Deluxe still shows this difference value as Tax Due.

Can please somebody confirm this is a bug in the application calculation and that fields are reversed or explain what is happening.

Total Tax vs Total Payments on Fed and State level

There might be other taxes that you owe besides the tax to New York State, such as New York City tax or Yonkers tax. I suggest you look at the New York tax summary page to get a better overview of what how your New York tax and payment due is being calculated by using these menu tabs while in your New York return in TurboTax:

  1. Tools
  2. Tax Tools (left side of the menu bar)
  3. View Tax Summary
