The Child Tax Credit and Working Family Credit

Hello, I have a question about the Child Tax Credit and Working Family. Here is my situation, we have only 1 dependent age 2. My partner is claiming the Child Tax Credit. However, I'm claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit due to my wages being lower than her. She doesn't qualify for EITC due to her wages. Everything went fine on the Federal part, it says I don't qualify for the Child and Other Dependent Tax Credit due to me saying my other partner is claiming. Sweet good. that's what I want. I also got the Earned Income Tax Credit of $3,052. Then next I'm on the State Taxes part. Minnesota Credits it says I have $2,110 for the Child and Working Family Credits, I do NOT want that? I can't change it, when I edit it says Good news! Your 2024 Minnesota Child and Working Family Credit is $2,110. I do not want it since my partner is claiming it! I can only click continue. Please help?

Can you decline the Minnesota Child and Working Family Credit?

  • No. This credit is automatically calculated by the state based on your income and eligibility, and it can't be declined, even if your partner is claiming the child for federal purposes.

Why is the credit showing for you?

  • Minnesota’s rules for the Child and Working Family Credit are separate from federal tax credit rules. Eligibility is determined by your state's taxable income and household size, not by who claims the child on federal taxes.

Other Steps You Can Do?

  1. Confirm Eligibility: Use the Minnesota Department of Revenue Child and Working Family Credit Calculator to confirm your eligibility.
  2. Retain Documentation: Keep all relevant documentation in case of verification.

The Child Tax Credit and Working Family Credit

Thank you Sabrina. I have one last question. Here is my situation. We have 1 child dependent age 2. My girl makes over 100k so she does NOT qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from the federal. I made less than 65k so I qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. My partner is claiming the child tax credit. Here is the screenshot.

On the 1st picture on the federal part everything it says is correct, yes I do not want to claim my child due to my partner claiming. But on the 2nd and last picture on my State Taxes, it says Minnesota Credits, Child and Working Family Credits balance $2,110. I do NOT want that because my partner is claiming the child tax credit. When I try to edit. It just says Good News! Your 2024 Minnesota Child and Working Family Credits is $2,110? I don't understand.

What is going on? Here is the picture.

The Child Tax Credit and Working Family Credit

MN has a variety of credits. The working family credit is based on your income and household size. This is different from child tax credit. The screen is combining credits. Your child should be zero. See Credits for more information and qualifications. It could be the entire amount is your working family credit.

View your return to verify which credits are used and the amounts. To see your forms:

If your child should have no affect on your return, remove them from your return.
