This is a technical issue, not a tax question. I entered an HSA contribution as a deduction. Now they are forcing me to buy the premium version of TurboTax in order to submit any return.
I want to edit/remove that HSA item, and it will not allow me. My frustration is skyrocketing. Please advise.

If you made any contributions to or took any distributions from your HSA, the IRS requires you to file form 8889.
Form 8889 is supported by TurboTax products Deluxe and above.
Your contributions to your HSA have already been reported to the IRS if through your employer when your employer send the IRS a copy of your W-2 and to the IRS by the HSA custodian when they send heir copy of the 5498-SA (this form is filed sometime between now and the end of May).
Thus, your failure to report your HSA contributions will prompt the IRS to send you a letter requesting why you did not report the contribution.
Therefore, we cannot recommend you removing your HSA information when you are clearly required to file the form.
Upgrading to Plus is $40... but when I add it my state return also suddenly becomes $40 instead of Free. So it's actually $80 instead of $40? Is it impossible to pay only for the federal return?
You have two options:
1. If you are eligible, switch to IRS Free File Program administered by TurboTax. See this link about the Free File Program.
However, note that this program has stringent requirements that you may not qualify for.
2. If Free File does not work out for you, then you can try to drop the state and file only the federal return. Please see this FAQ for how to do it.
