Taxpayers are allowed a credit for the purchase of plug-in electric drive vehicles used for either business or personal purposes. The credit, which ranges between $2,500 and $7,500 for light-duty vehicles, varies depending on the weight of the vehicle and kilowatt hour of battery capacity.
The credit phases out for each car manufacturer when they reach a total of 200,000 electric cars sold for use in the United States.
To determine if you are eligible, click on Deductions & Credits under the Federal menu. Under Cars and Other Things You Own, choose Start/Revisit next to Energy-Efficient Vehicles. Currently, this form is not available, as TurboTax is waiting for updates on the approved vehicles. This credit is reported on Form 8936, which is estimated to become available on February 12, 2020.
Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Credit
Turbo Tax claims it would have form 8936 (2019) ready by 2/5/20 . It is still unavailable. This is holding up the filing of my tax return. I have the form 8936 (2019) from the federal government. I am going to have to look at other tax programs since Turbo Tax does not seem to meet this requirement.
same experience here! need ASAP
so, LinaJ020 can you tell us what is going on now. some of same? can anyone get it completed moretimely?
thanks. just really need it now. after having purchased turbotax for 15+ years, dont want to have to change and file somewhere else.
many thanks,
A.Mevers
I believe TurboTax is working to get the form live soon. Here's the Turbo Tax update:
Solved: Since Turbo Tax is not able to file the 8936 form ...
First is was February 5; now it is February 12. I will wait but I have to inform you that H&R Block software already supports Form 8936.
Get it together man, that was for 2018 and totally unrelated to the 2019 Form 8936 availability.
Expect better from a turbo tax employee.
All discussion threads say that form 8936 would be available on TurboTax by Feb 2 or Feb 5. It is Feb 7, and it is STILL NOT available. What is the new available date?

OK, I'm done with this.
I read through all the threads and it is apparent that Turbo Tax is the problem, not the IRS. TB sent their product to the IRS too late in the season to be tested and can't get it up and running for this year.
ALL!! go to H&R block. They have it up and running. They thought it through.
I just filed with H&R block myself. I simply can NOT wait any longer for my $5000 tax return.
Done with Turbo Tax forever. You have lost my business over these delays. I dont care whos fault it is. I care that the money is in my bank account as soon as possible.
This has been discussed on the Tesla forums as well, H&R block is simply faster because the IRS does froms testing with them before anyone else. Hence the earlier availability.
H&R Block is up and running for form 8936.
Nope. I called your customer service and they are saying 2/12/2020. When will it be ready????
I will wait one more day to see if they meet the 3rd changed date of 2/12/20. If it isnt up and running tomorrow morning H&R block will be getting a new customer.
