My child was in school and turned 23 in 2022. He had a summer internship, where he earned lots of money but little was used for expenses. I paid his clothing, education, and medical expenses. He was the beneficiary on a 529 plan (where I am the trustee) and the 529 plan paid his room and board during the school year.
Ergo, he did not pay 1/2 of his living expenses so I deem him to be a qualifying child and I think I can claim him as a dependent.
Or does the fact that the bulk of his expenses were paid by the 529 plan make him ineligible to be claimed as a dependent?

As your child is a full-time student and under 24 in 2022, you can claim him as a qualifying child as long as he did not provide more than half of their own support for the year. It does not matter how much he earned.
