Standard deduction incorrectly being substituted for Itemized deduction (line 12e)

Per Schedule A, $44129 should be entered on line 12e. However, TT is entering the Standard Deduction amount of 31,500 on that line and I can not correct it on the form or in the TT software???

Try using the steps outlined in the following TurboTax help article to choose to use Itemized Deductions for your return:

How do I change from the standard deduction to itemized (or vice-versa)?

TT’s “fix” does not work. You have to go into a worksheet to uncheck a box that directs TT to select the Standard Deduction, even if it’s the smaller choice. No TT support provided this fix. Posters helping each other led to this solution.

It may be that TurboTax was trying to take advantage of some Non Refundable Credits.

The Standard Deduction may allow a greater refund from these credits.

Did you qualify for any of these credits?

  • Child and Dependent Care Credit,
  • Lifetime Learning Credit,
  • Saver's Credit, and
  • Foreign Tax Credit.

These are Non-Deductible Credits.

This means that if you reduce your total tax to zero, the credit stops.

  • For example, if you are entitled to a $2,000 credit and you owe a total of $1,500 in taxes, you will only get $1,500 of the credit.
  • Please don't confuse the refund or amount you owe with the total tax owed.  The Total Tax Owed is on line 24 of the 1040 tax return.

None of those assumptions apply to my situation.

I specifically chose using the Itemized amount in the interview questions.

TT defaulting to the Standard Deduction is a programming glitch. If I hadn’t caught it, TT was producing a result of a $2,900 greater federal tax burden than I actually owed.
