I have the option in SC to deduct either income tax or sales tax. Income is much larger, but TT defaulted to sales tax and I cannot change it. Don't know if this came from a previous year of TT or what.

You should be able to change from sales tax to the state and local tax deduction and vice versa by going through the Sales Tax option in the Deduction and Credits section.
After you have gone through the sales tax section, you will end up on a screen titled We've Chosen a Deduction for You where you will see an option to check the box Change your Deduction where you can make the selection you prefer.
I'm trying to deduct SC state sales tax, but TurboTax is requiring me to identify my county, which is not listed, since it is one that does not have a local sales tax. Why can't I deduct state sales tax if I don't have a local sales tax?
When you go to enter the sales tax in TurboTax, you are asked what county you live in. If your county is not listed, you should choose "Other Locality" in the federal section of TurboTax.
I have tried and tried to change from the sales tax to the state and local tax deduction option. TT does not take me to the screen which gives you the option to change your deduction. HELP
TurboTax will automatically give you the highest deduction, whether it is Sales Tax or State and Local Taxes.
If you have W-2s, generally State and Local Taxes is larger than Sales Tax (unless you bought a new car, maybe!).
Type 'sales tax' in the Search area, then click on 'Jump to Sales Tax'. If you have entered both, the screen asking which you want to take will come up.
