Recovery Rebate Credit Removed

We switched bank accounts in 2020. Our 2nd stimulus was going to the old account, got rejected. We were told if was not received, to file on our taxes under the Recovery Rebate. We did that. Two weeks later a check showed up. We called the IRS and were told to mail the checks back, they’d be paid out on our returns. Our returns were delayed, presumably to check on all of this. So we took pictures, put notes and mailed the checks back first class certified and have proof they were received by our local tax office. Today our returns were finally processed and the rebates WERE REMOVED FROM OUR REFUNDS. So now we are out of a credit and out of a refund and no way to claim the payment further. Do I call them for a trace? It says they’ll credit it to the account for your tax refund, but the refunds have been processed?

Before starting the trace,

  • Try calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 Monday through Friday 7 AM - 7 PM.
  • You may need to get a Taxpayer Advocate to be your voice at the IRS. However, many local offices have staff working remotely right now. For more information, see: Topic No. 104 Taxpayer Advocate Service – Your Voice at the IRS.
    • By returning the checks certified mail and by having proof that the checks were returned, you will better be able to get them reissued.

Then, if necessary, begin the process of the trace. For more details, see: Economic Impact Payment Information Center — Topic F: Payment Issued but Lost, Stolen, Destroyed or ...
