There is an error in Charitable Donations, but it can be corrected. For the case that did not have any donations, leave the field blank. If you have anything at all in the Charitable Donations section, return to this area and delete it, first.

To return to the donations section of your return, follow these steps:

  • Go to your search box and enter charitable contributions and click the Jump to link in the search results.
  • You may want to initially answer yes to the question: Did you make any donations to charity in 2020? if you think there may be something in this section to delete.
    • Otherwise, answer no to deactivate this section.
  • Follow through the rest of the prompts until you are at Review All your Charities
    • Click the Trash can icon to delete any entry here since you said you had 0 gifts to charity.

If you do have donations, then follow the steps below. The key is the sequencing of the entry in posting cash donations made and having TurboTax recalculate your tax breaks. Anything listed in the Cares Act section before first being entered as a deduction will produce unexpected results.

To do this in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  • First, enter in the charitable donation amount as you normally would.
    • From the left menu, select Federal.
    • Select the second tab from the left across the top, Deductions & Credits.
    • Scroll down to Charitable Donations.
    • Enter your details.
  • When finished entering all donations, select Done with Charitable Donations and Continue.
  • Scroll to the end of Deductions & Credits and select Done with Deductions.
    • You may need to respond to any other additional questions. You will eventually see: The Standard Deduction is Right for You!
    • Click Continue.
    • Now, you will see Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act where you will see any qualified contribution amount already entered from your earlier posts. Select Continue.
      • If you have entered something else in this field, delete it so that TurboTax will calculate it automatically.

For more information, see IRS Charitable Contributions Deductions.
