Total Foreign Earned Income is for most expats is the amount shown on your payslip that you get from your employer. It is often augmented by housing allowance, items that your employer paid for you etc.
Hope this helps
Hello,
I'm stuck on the same question. I've entered all the information already, but somehow TT doesn't know this? I assume that "Total Foreign Earned Income" is my gross income. But... what does "less related deductions" refer to? I assume they're "related" to my foreign earned income, but which "deductions" is it referring to? (And why can't it simply list what they are?)
Update to this for 2021: same bug persists in TT. This is now (at least) the 4th year that Intuit has known of this bug.
I'm paying for the super-premium live tax review option, and every year I spend hours on the phone with a TT certified tax professional as they struggle to figure out what the problem is and what the solution is. Every year I tell them I had the same problem the previous year. Intuit doesn't seem to have a way to keep notes on problems they encounter year-to-year, so every year I have to re-explain the problem from scratch, and the TT person helping me has to do a full investigation from scratch. They ultimately give me a number to enter but no answer as to why TT doesn't enter the number itself.
There are still no instructions, documents or help text links for any of the foreign income sections. One year I had a former IRS employee helping me, and even he spent hours figuring it out. I think that pretty clearly illustrates that there's no way any customer could figure out what to put here on their own.
