Is the home office listed in your self-employed Schedule C?

Please confirm that you qualify for a home office.

Are you self-employed and not paid on a W-2?

To deduct expenses for business use of the home, you must use part of your home as one of the following:

  1. Exclusively on a regular basis as your principal place of business for your trade or business;
  2. Exclusively on a regular basis as a place where you meet or deal with your patients, clients, or customers in the normal course of your trade or business;
  3. A separate structure that's not attached to your home, used exclusively on a regular basis in connection with your trade or business;
  4. On a regular basis for storage of inventory or product samples used in your trade or business of selling products at retail or wholesale, so long as your home is the sole fixed location of such trade or business;
  5. For rental use; or
  6. As a daycare facility.

Yes, I qualify for the deduction. Turbotax says I qualify then it has me put all the info in.  When it calculates everything it says that I have a net income of zero so I have to carry it over to next year. However, I don't have a net income of zero.

The percent of business use of the home office is missing from the calculation and therefore the result is that the calculation shows a loss for your business.

When you go through the Federal Review of your return, this error will be flagged and you can enter the amount on that review screen.  The amount to enter is the percentage of time that you spend in your home office making money for your business.  If all of your time is spent working in your home office for your business, then enter 100%.

You can also make the correction to the calculation using Forms Mode.  Use these steps:

  • Click Forms on the top row of TurboTax.
  • Go to Form 8829.
  • Scroll to the section titled Line 8 Calculation Smart Worksheet and enter your percent of business use of the home office on line B.
  • Click Step-by-Step at the top of the screen to go back to the input screens.
