Recovery Rebate Credit being calculated incorrectly

Not only do I close out the program each time I finish or pause using it, which triggers the update when I open the program again, I also manually asked for an update when I got the IRS letter.  I had to do it three times, AND deleted the information in the form and started over manually entering information to make it agree with what the IRS worksheet ended up saying.  Now the East interview part reads $2151 for first EI payment, and $951 for second (in lieu of two $2151 amounts).  This does zero out the $951 credit.  I would not normally have spent this amount of time questioning that TT would not calculate it correctly.

I cannot explain it but using your AGI that is not what I get.    (Perhaps there was a problem but an update fixed it.)   I am not sure what you think is wrong now since that seems to be what you get also.

Recovery Rebate Credit being calculated incorrectly

My reason for bringing this to the forum is that when I started the thread I was not coming up with the IRS' numbers.  I could not explain how I ended up making a mistake which resulted in a penalty and interest plus past due tax amount on the credit which I allowed TurboTax to compute for me - incorrectly.  Since I could not find where I made the error in answers, i reached out.

Meanwhile, after not reading anything helpful from other threads, I started updating over and over.  I erased all the information in the worksheet and manually typed in the responses, multiple times.

This is not what anyone who purchases a TurboTax product expects.  People who buy the program are not CPA's, are not going to look up every single law and catch every flaw in your programming - this was a new form and not something I knew to look for.  This was not an advertised flaw, and I expect that updates take care of any flaws that are discovered.

Learning that TurboTax expects me to double check their math, and expects me to manually update multiple times (not defined how many)  for any unknown and undisclosed possible flaws.  How would I know the flaws are fixed?  I answered every question correctly - and expect that the information is absorbed correctly by the program.  Not being a CPA, I expect Turbo Tax to make me eligible / aware of any credits or deductions that I might not know about.  That is the whole reason for using the program or a professional.

Maybe someone else will be receiving similar "love letters" from the IRS demanding back what is rightfully theirs, plus penalty and interest - I think they should know they are not alone, and so should TurboTax.  I think Turbo Tax should pay for the penalty and interest, and make the claim link public and accurate (the one which was given to another customer was not a functioning link and that customer was unsuccessful at locating the real one).

TurboTax guarantees that their calculations are accurate.  If you are charged a penalty because of a calculations error then submit a claim.  TurboTax will pay any penalty or inters but not the tax that you would have paid anyway if not for the error.

"It could still have experienced a communication error during the download. "

@DanPaul02  Are you guys programmers or what? This is the typical novice programmer excuse for bugs - it was a download error or the program file is corrupted.

Not willing to admit the program is broken.

If TurboTax submitted this error on millions of returns, that is why the IRS is backed up and I am still waiting for my refund.

@dabenj1  Always print a copy of your completed tax return for your records, and review it carefully before e-Filing.
You will need it if you are audited by the IRS, or to amend if a TurboTax update changes your return or for any other reason,
SUCH AS, Confirm that your 1040 line 30 is ZERO since you already got your stimulus.
