Primary residence property tax deduction

Schedule A Worksheet - why does it ask for primary residence taxes twice - 2a and 2d? My deduction is showing up as 2 times what it should be!

Please Clarify!

On the Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet

  • 2a is Was the mortgage interest reported to you on form 1098?
  • 2d Is this loan secured by a residence of yours?

On Schedule A

  • line 2 is Enter amount from Form 1040.  There are no a or d.
  • line 8a is Home interest mortgage and points from 1098
  •  line 8d is mortgage insurance premiums.

YOUR QUESTIONS SEEM NOT TO ADDRESS MY ISSUE:

Schedule A Worksheet - why does it ask for primary residence taxes twice - 2a and 2d?

2. State and local real estate taxes:
2a: "Real estate taxes paid on principal residence not entered on Form 1098 $___"
2d: "Principal residence"  $____"

It depends. Please clarify because I am confused by your question. i am looking at a Home mortgage Interest Worksheet and the only information it asks for is if the mortgage was reported on the 1098 in 2a and if the mortgage is secured by the property in 2d. It makes no reference to property taxes. Property taxes are reported in Box 8 of the worksheet.

Can you send me a screenshot of what you are seeing so I can better address your question?

You are looking at the wrong worksheet.

It is the Tax and Interest Deduction Worksheet.

Primary residence property tax deduction

On the Tax and Interest Deduction worksheet, line 2a is "real estate taxes paid on principal residence not entered on form 1098". Line 2e is "[by implication: state and local real estate taxes on a] vacation home".

You would think that by definition, a vacation home is not your principal residence. So did you enter this tax amount twice into TurboTax in two different places?

Is it possible that you are trying to enter this in Forms mode? You should really try to avoid using Forms mode, if there is a way to make the entries through the Step-by-Step mode.

Are you asking about some state worksheet and not the Federal?

The Federal worksheet looks like this:
2a & 2d are just check boxes.
