I’m trying to efile, but keep getting kicked out due to the cash charitable donation section ln 1040No matter what amount I put or leave it blank, it never works. Help!!

What is wrong with turbo tax! I can’t file because of this error with their software. Barely any information to find, what is happening? Line 1040 keeps telling me the amount is too large even at $0.

If you are in TurboTax Online, the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act appears as the end of Deductions & Credits. First you have to pass the screen Based on what you told us, the standard deduction is best for you at the end of Deductions & Credits.

You have to qualify for the standard deduction before the screen appears.  So you may want to change the value of one or more itemized deductions to $1 so that you qualify for the standard deduction.

Follow these steps:

  • At the top of the screen, click on Deductions & Credits.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Wrap up tax breaks.
  • Continue through several screens.
  • At the screen Based on what you told us, the standard deduction is best for you, click Continue.
  • At the screen Any Charitable Cash Contributions? remove the dollar amount.
  • Continue through Federal Review to make sure that things look correct.

Then restore your itemized deductions dollar amounts.

This is not working.  I'm taking the standard deduction with a $221 contribution in line 10 of Form 1040.  I cannot efile due to this bug and cannot seem to fix it.  What do I do??

If you have this listed as a donation in the charitable donation, section, remove it (them).

  1. Go to federal>deductions and credits>charitable donations>
  2. Donations to Charity in 2020>start or revisit
  3. You should be at a page that says review your charities. If you have some listed, delete them all with the trash icon.
  4. If this doesn't work, go to your list of forms and see if there is a charitable organization worksheet. Go to:
  5. Tax tools>tools>delete a form
  6. Look for any charitable organization worksheets and delete these, if present.

Well then how do I input  the up to $300 charity deduction when taking the standard deduction if I delete all the charities?   I followed the interview routine cleanly through to the end, after getting the "you're better off taking the standard deduction" screen  but then came up with this glitch stating "too high".  It was $221..  I thought TT populated the field from my charity inputs.

Yes, the program does use your charity input but somehow yours is not flowing as it should. It is supposed to tell you standard deduction and then when you look at your return, there is the extra contribution allowed.

Is there anything else odd when you preview your return? Does it show the charity correctly? See How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

Something is stuck somewhere in your charity flow through. Form here is your charity worksheet.

For stuck information follow these steps:

  1. Delete the form, see How to Delete
  2. Log out of your return
    1. Try one or more of the following:
      • Don't use Internet Explorer.
      • Clear cache and cookies,
      • Sign in using a different browser.
      • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the form again.
