The form 8889-S is the TurboTax name for the 8889 for your spouse (each taxpayer with an HSA gets a form 8889 - 8889-T is for the primary taxpayer). Note that you don't receive a form 8889, but TurboTax generates one for each taxpayer that has an HSA.
Somehow you indicated to TurboTax that your spouse had an HSA. This could have been to a code W in box 12 of his/her W-2 (which means that he/she does have an HSA) or it could have been because you checked (however briefly) the HSA for your spouse in the first screen of the HSA interview (Federal->Deductions & Credits->Medical->HSA, MSA Contributions).
Note that TurboTax may create a 8889-S as a worksheet, even if it turns out that your spouse doesn't need one - the form will not be printed or send to the IRS in this case. But it shouldn't cause an error message, either.
If your spouse does not have a code W in box 12 of the W-2 (this indicates that the employer is contributing to the HSA) nor has a 1099-SA, then you should delete your HSA content and start over. Please do the following:
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen
*** Desktop***
3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go
back and redo the entire HSA interview.
*If* you are in a situation where one person has a job with a pre-tax health care deduction that is done in the style of HSA, *and* the other spouse is the one who is actually providing health insurance for the family (or couple), you won't be able to overcome this problem and you will have to print and file by mail.
This is caused by the fact that TurboTax does not acknowledge that an HSA could exist without a high deductible plan. Hence it will insist on you filling out a form 8889, even though there is nothing to put on it. When you try to not fill in the radio buttons on 8889, TurboTax will not let you e-file. You will have to print your taxes and mail them to the IRS.
How do we file by mail in this situation? Do we just finish out the steps on turbo tax and select mail in taxes at the end? Then just leave out the 8889s form because we dont need it?
Don't file by mail, file the necessary forms. You said that you both have employer contributions to HSA. You each need an 8889 to account for that employer contribution and to make sure that between the two employers, you did not exceed the allowed limits. An HSA is a tax deferred way to grow savings for health expenses that can be used in later years. An HSA is only allowed when you have an HDHP. Since both employers contributed to an HSA, you must both have HDHP.
Please see About Form 8889, Health Savings Accounts which states:
You must file Form 8889 if any of the following applies.
You (or someone on your behalf, including your employer) made contributions for 2022 to your HSA.
You received HSA distributions in 2022.
You must include certain amounts in income because you failed to be an eligible individual during the testing period.
