HSA deduction as part year resident of VA and CO

Hello,

We've maxed out HSA deduction in 2021 ($7200 into two HSAs, joined returned with my spouse). This was personal contribution. My employer doesn't offer any kind of HSA contributions (or anything similar).

We lived in VA in the beginning of 2021 but moved to CO in June 2021. Both HSA accounts have been set up (and money has been transferred) in Nov 2021 so while we were already CO residents.

When going through tax returns the VA one comes up first with question:

"Enter the portion of the following items that XXXX paid while VA resident. If None enter 0."
HSA saving account Federal [$3600]  VA [????].
Same question for my spouse.

Now it seems that the "Enter..." prompt is generic and may include many different situations but nevertheless the correct answer to this question is "0" for both me and my spouse so that was my answer.

In case of CO I get similar question however both amounts are combined ($7200) but there is a default value given for CO portion which is $2647. The prompt says "The program automatically calculates the Colorado portion based on your income for most common adjustments of income. Enter different value when required".

From what I understand I have two options:
1. Leave the default calculated by TT as $2647 for CO and adjust the numbers for VA from $0 to appropriate numbers so that the grand total is $7200. This feels incorrect as I haven't even had HSA when I was VA resident.

2. Leave VA as $0 and adjust CO to $7200 which seems to better reflect the reality? This will however ignore TT suggestion and default value calculated based on my income.

Which one should I choose? Or is there another option?

Enter 0 (zero) for Virginia and 3,600 for each of you in Colorado. As you note, this reflects reality and is easy to defend.
