I believe that you are asking about the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit.

At the screen Homeowner or Renter? What choice did you make?

The choices are:

  • Homeowner
  • Renter and
  • Mobile Home Park Resident

See also this State of Michigan information.

I selected mobile home park resident.  TurboTax automatically selected Renter as well.

I suspect you are renting a space for the mobile home, so that is why you would be considered  a renter.

Thank you both, but my question was how to stop being asked the taxable value.  It pops up as unanswered in the review at the end.  I have the correct option picked, yet it is asking the taxable value of the property, which is not applicable.  This has not happened in previous years, and my tax filing has been the same.  I have reviewed all my answers in that section but cannot find what is causing the discrepancy.

If you just choose Renter instead of selecting mobile home park resident, that question should go away.   Since the credit is dependent of the taxable value of your property, TurboTax will ask if it is possible you own the home you pay for.

You may qualify for a property tax credit if all of the following apply:

  • You own or were contracted to pay rent and occupied a Michigan homestead for at least 6 months during the year on which property taxes and/or service fees were levied.  If you own your home, your taxable value was $135,000 or less (unless unoccupied farmland)
  • Your total household resources were $60,000 or less (part year residents must annualize total household resources to determine if a credit reduction applies)
  • If 100% of your total household resources were received from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, you do not qualify

Note: You may be required to submit documentation to support your claim. See Homeowners or Renters Checklist for details.

Thank you everyone who responded.  None of these were the reason why it was happening. As stated, the information was checked multiple times and filled out correctly on the state form. It was a carry over error from the federal form in the property tax credit section.
