Tax Year Prior to 2020: Education Credits

The Turbo Tax software won't let me enter my tuition expense so I can claim the education credit. The number is zero and grayed out. When I click on the link for "Tuition and Enrollment Fees" it tells me that I have already entered the number which is obviously false. Where else could this number be entered? Will this glitch be fixed soon? Is there a work-around?

If you see your school listed with a $0, follow these steps to enter your current year data:

    1. Login toTurboTax.com.
    2. Click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
    3. If prompted, click on Continue where I left off or Take me to my return.
    4. Choose Deductions and Credits.
    5. Expand the Education section.
    6. Click on Start (or Revisit).
    7. Proceed through the entire education section answering all of the additional questions - you will go through about 8-10 additional screens, and then you should reach a summary page.
    8. On the Education Summary screen at the end of the section, click Edit/Delete.
    9. Edit your entries.

If you still cannot edit the data or you cannot get to the Education Summary screen, follow these additional steps:

    1. Click on Tax Tools in the menu on the left of the screen.
    2. Click on Tools.
    3. Scroll down the list of forms and click delete beside Form 1098-T.
    4. Confirm on the next screen by clicking Delete Form.
    5. Scroll down the list of forms again and click Delete beside Education Tuition and Fees Summary.
    6. Again, confirm on the next screen by clicking Delete Form.

This should clear the section out entirely and let you start fresh.

The education tax credits are not calculating correctly claiming not eligible. Is there something wrong with the software?? I tested another tax software or a comparison and TT is definitely not working right. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

What version of the software are you using? Education credit can only be claimed when using TurboTax Deluxe and up. The credit is not available on the free version of TurboTax.
