Can I take the Qualified Caregiving Expense Credit for expenses incurred travelling back and forth from GA to NC to care for my dad? I spent about $200/week for 10 months until he passed away in October.

@Steve_H47 -  No. There does not appear to be a Federal Qualifying Care Giver Credit in US.  There is a similar credit available to Canadians.  If you are in Canada please check with our CA support group at this link.  TurboTax Support - Canada

Thank you for responding. There IS in fact a Qualified Caregiving Credit according to the IRS and TurboTax. I just want to know if I qualify for it.

There are three categories for the Qualified Caregiving Credit:

  • Infirm dependent credit: 
  • Caregiver credit: 
  • Family caregiver tax credit: 

They all require that the individual be your dependent.   Note that there is no requirement that the dependent actually lives with you in order to claim this credit. The credit also has some significant income restrictions for the dependent.

 

In TurboTax, there is a Dependent Care Credit.

  1. It is in Deductions & Credits
  2. You and Your Family
  3. Dependent Care Credit
