1099-MISC and Deductions?

Hey everyone,

I'm confused here and need some help. I am a 100% commissioned outsides salesman in capital equipment. In 2019 a manufacture, who's equipment I sell, did a cash spiff for selling their equipment. I received a 1099-MISC form from the manufacture. I added it to my income for 2019. The question is, TurboTax automatically makes me fill out a self-employed business form to apply for a deduction. The problem is, I'm not self-employed. I cannot figure out how to make this step go away so that I do not apply for the deduction.

Any input? Thanks in advance.

Randy.

While you may not be "self-employed" the income you received that was reported on Form 1099-MISC is considered self-employment income, and is reported on Schedule C.  If you have any expenses to deduct related to the income reported on your Form 1099-MISC, you will need to use TurboTax Self-Employed.  If you don't have any expenses to deduct related to that income you can use Deluxe or Premier (it will report the income on Schedule C, but you can't deduct any expenses).  If you have already upgraded to Self-Employed and you want to go back to to Deluxe or Premier, you will have to Clear and Start Over.

1099-MISC and Deductions?

Hey David,

Thanks for the quick response! I am using the Premier 2019 edition. Like I said, I absolutely am reporting the 1099-MISC in my wages. The problem I have is that it automatically says that I may be eligible to use this reported income as a expense. It forces me to go to that step and ask me to enter in my "business name" and the associated info, which I do not have. If I just leave that info blank, then when it runs the self check these items keeps popping up as needing to be filled in.

For business name, just enter your name.  Use your home address as business address.  For business description, use something like equipment sales.  For NAIC #, put 999999.  Just enter basic info that will let you move forward.

Thanks.  I’ve been dealing with the exact same aggravation today doing my taxes.  I guess I’ll jump back in and try it.

1099-MISC and Deductions?

i have a similar question as I received a 1099 Misc for "car allowance" and I enter it as 1099 Misc and then, it also shows up at Business income.  I  feel that it is duplicatingC my income by showing it under both headings. Should I delete it from 1099 Misc and leave it in Business income or should it be in both?

1099-MISC and Deductions?

The program might show it under both headings, but it isn't duplicating it. It is just saying that your income is XYZ and of that income Z is business related.

After the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, getting a car allowance is more difficult to report for the taxpayer, because employee expenses are no longer deductible.

On the one hand, having the amount reported on a 1099-MISC will allow you to claim the expenses associated with using your car, on the other, you may need to pay for an upgrade in TurboTax.

1099-MISC and Deductions?

I received a 1099 MISC form with income only in Box 3. I am retired and my employer gave it as help toward health insurance. I am not self employed and don't need Schedule C. Where do I put this amount??

Report the income as Other Income on Schedule 1 line 8 and not self-employment income on Schedule C.

This help explains the steps needed to enter the form 1099-Misc.

1099-MISC and Deductions?

I am not self-employed & do not own a business. However I received a 1099-MISC from my part time job with a 2nd employer. How do I report this as simple income?

You can report it as other income if you are not engaged in business activity:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. Click on Show more next to Other Common Income under Income & Expenses section
  3. Click on Start or Revisit next to Form 1099-Misc
  4. Enter information from your 1099-Misc form.
