I contacted my daughter's preschool and they said they aren't allowed to give their EIN number for taxes, saying it's because they are a non-profit. Is this correct?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
They don't necessarily have to provide you with their EIN, but you can account for this in the TurboTax program.
When you're entering your information in the Child and Dependent Care interview process:
Complete the Dependent Care interview.
The law is a bit peculiar actually. Any business that pays employees must have an EIN, even if they are also a tax-exempt nonprofit. But the law allows tax exempt day care organizations to just tell you they are “tax exempt”, and you enter that on your tax return..
They are required to fill out a W-10 if you give it to them.
The W-10 has a spot for the ID number, and if they are a qualifying Tax-Exempt organization, they will write "Tax-Exempt" in that box, and then you can follow the directions given above.
