Opened HSA in Jan 2022 so can I contribute for 2021 and deduct?

Hello.  I opened an HSA account in Jan 2022.  I am self-employed and my spouse and I are on a COBRA HDHP and were on that plan for all of 2021.  Can I take the $7200 total family deduction on my 2021 taxes or would I only be eligible for the deduction on my 2022 taxes?  Thanks TT Community.

Yes, you would take the deduction in your name only assuming that your social security number is on the form.

Here is a TurboTax article with more information about IRS Form 8889.

Thanks PattiF BUT my HSA was first opened in 2022 so can I still take a 2021 deduction?

No, you can't take the deduction in 2021. But you can deduct the expenses in 2022.

That's what I was thinking but glad you confirmed.  For 2022 Taxes, if the HSA is under my name and I am filing jointly-married and the $7300 is allowed as a family deduction, do I take that deduction under my name (i.e. form 8889-T) only even if both are medical expenses are covered under the Family HDHP?  There's also form 8889-S for my spouse but assume that form would not be completed?  Thanks.
