On Schedule C, I moved so I'm trying to put in 2 different home offices, but it's flagging my acquired date for the second home office as after the start of the business.

I purchased a home in August but started the business in January. I used the apartment I was living in from Jan-Aug as home office and put that in the details and clicked on two home offices and entered all the details about the apartment. Then from sept-dec purchased a home and put all the details of that home office in. I'm not sure if I should change the acquired date or leave as is since I didn't purchase the home until August 30

I was unable to replicate the error you are encountering, but I would offer some suggestions:

  • Be certain that you have checked the box indicating that you have two or more home offices for this business.
  • Verify that your answers to the question about how many months you worked at least 15 day in this home office do not total more than 12 months.
  • If you are taking depreciation on the business-use portion of your house, be certain that the disposition date for the depreciable asset(s) is no later that the occupancy date for the new office.

Ok, Thank you. It will only let me change the acquired date, it will not let me change the date placed in service. I entered information about both residences and stated that the house was placed in service on 9/1 and acquired on 8/30 and the apartment was placed in service on 1/1 and the usage was not more than 100% for both and not more than 12 months. I'm not sure if I should just change the acquired date, because on the form 8829, it's only showing me information for the house, not the apartment and only the one date is editable.

Check through all forms. There should be 2 Forms 8829, one for each home office.
