Form 80-160 is used to give you credit for taxes paid to another state. You need to have finished the other state return before you work on MS. The program should calculate the credit for you.
The form does need to know your income earned along with any deductions and exemptions to determine the taxable income.
I finished the non resident state first but Turbo Tax did not transfer the data when I filed the resident state. Seems like there is an error in the software. Where do I find the “STANDARD” or “ITEMIZED” deduction?
Resident of Mississippi filing non-resident Louisiana
Based on Louisiana's 2024 Form IT-540B, you need to enter the amount from Line 12, Standard deduction or itemized deductions, of your federal Form 1040 (2024).

The error message states: Standard or itemized deduction from the STATE you are claiming a credit for taxes paid to needs to be entered, if not applicable or enter 0. It’s referring to the STATE we paid taxes in, not the federal deduction which is different. The software should auto populate this data, I should NOT have to go look for it. In fact, 2 other Tax services told me the software should auto populate. I’m pretty sure TurboTax has a glitch/error is why I’m reaching out.
I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file, which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

Good morning! I am having the same issue but I am filing Mississippi resident; non resident Alabama. How do I answer this:
Form 80-160 (States 1 - 3): Exemption amount from the state you are claiming a credit for taxes paid to needs to be entered or if not applicable, enter 0. |
?
The state requires Form 80-160 be filled in with the income, deductions and exemption for the taxable income. You can look at the state tax form for your nonresident state to get this information. For AL, look at lines 12, 13, 15, 16, and 18 to verify your MS form.
To print or view your forms, including all worksheets:
So, do I need to pay first before viewing the forms? If I pay first, can I still make changes to my return?
Yes, you must pay first before you can view the tax return. And yes, you can go back and make changes after you view the forms BEFORE you file the return. The return is not finalized until you have filed it.
