My daughter turned 17 in March 2022, so she will be 17 for approx 9 months of 2022. It asks how many dependents are UNDER the age of 17. Will I get my $2,000 tax credit?

@sherikteach  the age is always based on the age as of 12/31/end of year, so if your question is about your 2022 tax return (to be filed in early 2023), she would be considered 17 years old and not eligible for the $2,000.  However, she would be eligible for the 'other dependent' tax credit of $500.

if you are completing the 2021 tax return, why are you asking about $2,000? most would be eligible for $3,000.  And the rule for 2021 was 'under 18' for that one year only.

Are you using turbo tax or are you doing this manually?

I suspect you are filling out a W-4 for a new job and want to know if your child qualifies for the  credit? They do not, because your child will not be "under 17" if she is 17 on December 31. Remember that you got the full credit in the year they were born, even though they were only alive half the year. So you don’t get any credit the year they turn 17, even though they were under 17 for half the year.

Yes, I will fix it.  Either way, the point is the same.  If you are filling out your W-4, when it asks:

Multiply the number of qualifying children under age 17 by $2,000

That means under age 17 on the last day of the year (December 31, 2022).
