Moving from NY to NJ but still got charged 4 months of NY State Taxes

Hi there,

I have a strange situation, on November 1st 2020 I moved from NY to NJ, I updated my work address and such my employer stopped charging me NY City taxes; however, I failed to update my W4 and continued to get charged NY State taxes until February 2021 when I realized this. I am now in the process of filing and I was wondering how I make sure that I can get those 2 months, November and December, refunded to be NJ taxes instead of NY taxes?

Thank you!

You need to file part-year tax returns in New York and New Jersey. If you overpaid your New York taxes, you will get a refund of those taxes from New York. There is no way to have the taxes that were paid in transferred to the proper state.

Thank you @ThomasM125

So if I was taxed NY State for November and December despite not living there, do I need to do anything specific in Turbo Tax or when I say in Turbo Tax that I was in NY from 01/01/20 > 10/30/20, it will automatically determine that I need a refund for November and December?

Thanks

You need to prepare a part-year resident return for New York, which the program may or may not suggest. Once in the program, you will be prompted to enter the pertinent information to complete your tax return properly.

You should file a Colorado non-resident return to determine if you owe any tax there.
