Medical Expenses - 2024

The amount in the question is 7.5% of your AGI. Only medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of AGI are deductible. If your total unreimbursed medical expenses are less than 7.5% of your AGI you would have no deduction, so there's no point in even entering the expenses.

If you do enter medical expenses, enter the full amount that you paid. TurboTax will subtract 7.5% of your AGI.

Some states have a lower threshold for medical expenses on the state tax return. If you live in one of those states, the amount that TurboTax asks about will be less than 7.5% of AGI because you might be able to get a deduction on the state tax return even if your expenses are not high enough to get a deduction on the federal tax return.
