medical deductions

I never file my taxes with medical deductions because I don't believe I spend enough money before to deduct, since turbo tax says you got to spend a lot of money but they don't say how much.  Anyway ,for 2021 my wife had a rare condition in her skin, she was in the hospital then she's been taken care of by a Dermatologist and I been spending a lot of money out of my pocket because my insurance doesn't cover everything , plus my teenager son with his allergies and my self with the dentist. Medical bills and prescriptions for my wife and my son were $7810.00 and the Dentist for my self was $7000.00, a total of $14,810.00 in 2021. can I claim this money in my taxes under medical deductions?   Please advice. Thanks

Yes, those are valid medical expenses.

Health care insurance premiums and other medical expenses that you paid with out of pocket funds are an eligible medical expense that you can deduct using Schedule A for itemized deductions. However, only your total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted. Your total itemized deductions reported on Form 1040 Schedule A must be greater than the standard deduction for your filing status to have any tax benefit.

Standard deductions for 2021

Single - $12,550 add $1,700 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $12,550 add $1,350 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $25,100 add $1,350 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $18,800 add $1,700 if age 65 or older

To enter your medical expenses -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Medical
On Medical Expenses, click the start or update button

Or enter medical expenses in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to medical expenses
