The credit is based on the property tax paid and your income. It could be worth up to $350. After your return has been accepted, you can start the amending process to see if you qualify for it. You can decide whether to amend your return after that.

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my question.

I double checked my filling and I did put the property tax of closing $4000. Where is it showing on the PDF tax form? Because I don’t see it on IT-201 (page 4) #67 real property tax credit.

The real property tax credit would show on Line 67.

To be eligible for this credit, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • you are subject to tax under Tax Law Article 22
  • you were a NYS resident for all of the tax year;
  • you owned and primarily resided for six months or more of the tax year in real property that received the STAR exemption or that qualified you for the STAR credit;
  • any rent you received from nonresidential use of your residence was 20% or less of the rental income;
  • you are the one that paid the real property taxes on the property fully or partially; and
  • your qualified gross income must be $250,000 or less.

To amend your return, please see How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed.

If you elect to amend to add the property tax credit, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click State on the left-hand side.
  3. Click Edit next to New York.
  4. On the screen, You Just Finished Your New York Return, click update next to Credits and other taxes.
  5. Continue through the screens.
  6. Answer yes on the screen Real Property Tax Relief Credit.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
