Itemized deductions

The program will not allow me to choose itemized deductions and keeps defaulting to standard deduction. Filing status is single......itemized deductions are much higher than standard deduction due to high medical bills for last year. My federal tax refund is same no matter which i choose but itemizing is better for my state return and i a can carry over excess medical deductions to next year. Why can't I choose itemized deductions?
