Check box 12 on the W-2 entry form,  Make sure that the Letter Code box does not say R or W, which indicate contributions to a Medical or Health Savings Account.  Once you've checked your W-2 entries, you can delete Form 8889-T

To delete the Form 8889-T (or any form) from your return, please follow these steps:

TurboTax Online

  1. While in your return, click My Account (in the blue bar at the top of the screen).  (See Screenshot #1 below.)
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Under "Other helpful links" click on Delete a form. (Screenshot #2)
  4. Click Delete next to the form and follow the onscreen instructions. (Screenshot #3)
  5. Once you have finished deleting the desired form(s) click the Continue with My Return box (in the lower right of your screen).

TurboTax Desktop (Windows)

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar.  (Screenshot #4)
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, double-click on  Form 8889-T to open it.
  3. Click on the Delete Form box at the bottom of the screen.
  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

TurboTax Desktop (Mac)

  1. To switch to Forms Mode, open your return, and then click the Forms icon in the upper left corner of your screen (or choose Go to Forms from the View menu at top).
  2. The Federal Information Worksheet will display and all the forms in your return will be listed on the left side.
  3. Select the form you want to remove.by clicking on it.
  4. After the form is generated in the right pane, click the Delete Form button at the bottom of the window.
  5. Follow any on-screen instructions to remove the form or forms.
  6. To switch back to the interview, click the EasyStep icon in the upper left corner, or choose Go to EasyStep from the View menu.

My W-2 box 12 does not have a "W" - Form 8889-T appears.  Clicking "Delete form" from Form menu does not delete form - form reappears as an error.

If there is no Code W on your W-2 and Form 8889 is appearing, try going to Federal > Wages & Income > Less Common Income > 1099-SA, HSA, MSA and click Start/Revisit. Make sure that neither you nor your spouse have HSA or MSA selected. If you do have something selected, click none of the above and confirm that you did not have a high deductible health plan at the end of 2020.

After doing that, if the form is still there, try deleting it again.
