Got it thanks @RoseKo that makes sense, was thinking of it as a credit rather than an offset to income.
You can check if it is added by going to View and looking at your form 1040. It should show on line 12b and then be added to your standard deduction amount. Your Cash charitable donations should then be included in the total on line 14. (Standard decution + your Cash charitable donation), which then lowers your taxable income.
It seemed as though it wasn't included as a decution and my tax due was not changing, but when I looked on the final form, it was included.
