If you live and earn abroad but have traveled into US on work for more than 30 days you can't claim foreign income exclusion.

TT help says you can file for an extension of time to file and if that meets the 30 day test, you can claim exclusion. How does this work?

You need to not be in the US for more than 35 days in any 12 month period.

Yes, you can use Form 2350 to extend your return until you have met the either the physical presence test or the bona-fide resident test.  You can extend your tax return to January 31, 2021 to give you time to meet the bona-fide resident test.  And you can extend your return to a date after you have met the physical presence test.  You will have to print and mail this extension.

You cannot file your return until you have met the test.  You should pay any balance due with your extension by July 15th.

There is a statement in TurboTax that will be attached to your return to get the automatic 2 month extension to June 15, (July 15th for this year). In the search box enter extension, filing, additional and click the Jump to link.  Click yes you want an extension and then on the next screen click that you want to prepare an out of country extension.    This does not prepare your Form 2350 , it will only add a statement to your return that you are abroad and would normally give you until June 15th to file.  However this year expats have the same deadline as everyone else on July 15th, unless you file an extension to October 15th or file Form 2350.
