If I don't have a business, can I write off sales tax for tools and materials I bought for my home improvement project I did for myself last year? Cost: ~$8k

our state sales tax is about 10.5%, so are we writing it off in addition of standard deduction or is it included in the standard deduction?  In other words, is it worth the hassle?  My money is kind of tight, so any write off helps.

If you are itemizing, the sales tax can be itemized for larger purchases.  It only takes a few moments to go through that section to see if it might save you some money.  I'd say it's worth a shot!
