Yes you may deduct these expenses on your return as Miscellaneous Itemized Deductions reported with Schedule A. Please keep in mind that Schedule A is the counterpart of the Standard Deduction. If the sum of deductions in Schedule A do not exceed your Standard Deduction amount, Schedule A will not be beneficial to your return. Additionally, these are Miscellaneous expenses that have a floor at 2% of your AGI, this means that only the sum Miscellaneous Deductions that above 2% of your AGI will be considered as a deduction.

Standard Deduction; Tax Year 2016

  • Single $6,300.00
  • Married Filing Joint or Qualified Widow(er) $12,600.00
  • Married Filing Separate $6,300.00
  • Head of Household $9300.00
  • Dependent $1,050.00
