identity protection pin - 2024 taxes

I recently created a pin using ID.me.

Is this the same pin that TT refers to as the "identity protection pin"?

Per TT, the identity protection pin must be entered to file 2024 taxes.

I was able to logon to the IRS with the pin created using ID.me.

Is this the same pin that TT is asking for?

thanks.

No, The TurboTax the TurboTax e-filing PIN is 5 digits.

  • You get the IP PIN from the IRS ID.me website and
    • The IRS ID pin is 6 digits long
  • You choose the e-filing PIN in TurboTax yourself.
    • This is 5 digits

OK - so I only need this 5 digit pin from TT if I want to e-file?
Thank you.

The IP PIN is your identity protection pin and must be entered in the program since you have one. Six digits.

The filing pin is just 5 numbers.

Reference:

There are several kinds of pins.

If you live in IL, you MUST get an IL PIN from the state department.

If you don’t know your Illinois PIN you can:

I was referring to the Identify Protection Pin that TT is asking for under Other Tax Situations/Other Return Info,

I now know this is a 6 digit pin issued by the IRS.
I can get the IP PIN for myself, but I am the spouse and my SSN is secondary.

Is that sufficient OR does the primary taxpayer (my husband) also need one to file with the IRS electronically??

Note I am referring to the ability to e-file using TT or directly with the IRS with the spouses (only) IP PIN.

Thanks.

The IP Pin is assigned per individual. It's possible for only one of you to have an IP Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  1. Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  2. Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Subtab Other Tax Situations
  4. Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  5. Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  1. Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  2. Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  3. In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  4. Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  5. In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"
