I can't edit real estate tax

@dih3

Pre-filled with a "$0" ? .... AHHH...

If it has an actual "zero" next to the $ sign, that means there is a "Supporting Details" sheet attached to that field.

1)  In 2018 you added "Supporting Details" to that entry...probably to describe  when & how paid.

2)  The Supporting Details sheets transferred into your 2019 file (but they get emptied of $$ values during the transfer to the next year).

3)  The Supporting Details are supposed to pop up as soon as you attempt to enter a value during the Interview...but it doesn't.  (desktop Software Bug in my opinion..reported last year too)

4) Workarounds   :

4a)  double-click in the field and the Supporting details sheet pops up and you can either delete it (hit the big red "X"), and now make an entry...or you can use the SuppDetails worksheet to enter your $$....OR...

4b)   Put your cursor in the box, and then go to the top menu on the screen and click on <Edit....then <<Add Supporting Details from the drop-down menu.  IF the SuppDet box shows up you can either add your entry in there...or hit the Red "X" to delete the whole SuppDet worksheet and then make your normal entry.....or...

4c)  One can also enter the proper $$ in the actual Worksheet in "Forms Mode"....if you cursor-drag hi-lite the $0, and then hit the "Forms" icon at the top of the screen, the actual worksheet line with the $0 will show up in Forms Mode. ...when attempting to enter any amount on that worksheet line, the SuppDet sheet pops up right away when you try to make an entry.

and the are other places ..like Medical Expenses, "Federal" Estimated Tax payments and (as you noted) Property tax payments...where the same "$0" issue may pop up in the interview.

I can't edit real estate tax

I agree.  I cannot edit the property tax amount either.  The only option is either to start completely over with a new return, or file it and amend it later.  I have read many other peoples' advice saying that you can just edit property taxes, but that is not true.  For some reason, that field does not seem to be allowed editing.

If this is incorrect, someone please explain how to edit this field.

I can't edit real estate tax

I cannot edit it also and not only that, I have a home office and I entered the a m't there also and now my taxes have tripled.  I've gone back and entered 0's in the fields and it's still incorrect.  It cannot be edited out at all.

finally figured out how to change incorrect property tax figures.  Go into mortgage interest edit and you can change it from there.

Yes! I was successful going back to Mortgage section; delete all the information and start that section again.

Same problem.  It looks like Real Estate tax can only be entered on the Mortgage screen, but we have no mortgage, we pay our property tax directly.  This needs to be fixed by Intuit!

Are you use the TurboTax online or desktop CD/Download editions?

What happens when you go to Federal Taxes>My Home>Property Taxes>Start or Edit/Revisit and enter/change/delete the Property Tax on your Main Home?

I can't edit real estate tax

I'm using the desktop/downloaded version 2019.41.8.190.

The screen you mentioned doesn't appear to be available.  It takes me through the Deductions & Credits tab, "I'll choose what I work on", Then Update "Property Taxes".

The screen has 3 fields: "Additional property taxes" (which is not editable), plus 2 others that are editable for additional homes and foreign RE taxes.

There is no selection for "Start or Edit/Revisit".

When I use the mortgage screen to enter RE tax, the fields for Outstanding principle and mrtg origination date are *required* and don't accept a value of zero. As a result it doesn't allow me to select 'Continue'.

We've been in the home for 35 years and no longer have a mortgage.

Thanks for your help

@dih3

I believe what might have happened is that you answered in the affirmative to the question as to whether you received a Form 1098.

You should be able to resolve this issue by revisiting the Mortgage Interest and Refinancing section and deleting the form entirely (see screenshot). Subsequently, you should be able to enter the amount of taxes on your main home in the Property Taxes section.

I can't edit real estate tax

Thanks for your help, but still no luck.

The after deleting the mortgage placeholder the first field name on the property tax screen changed to "Property tax on your main home", but it's pre-filled with $0 and is still not editable.

You're a TurboTax genius - thank you!

You were right, it did create a blank supporting details sheet based on last year's file.  Once I entered the 2019 amount there it populated the interview page.  Not super-intuitive, but it worked!
