I have excess contribution carried over from 2023. I have no HDHP in 2024. 8889 is autogenerated due to excess contribution, Creates line 1 error-self or family 2024?

I get a Federal Review error because it asks me to select if I had self or Family HDHP in 2024. I had no HDHP in 2024 form was generated due to excess contribution in 2023 when I did have HDHP. The 8889 also shows I funded the HSA in 2024 by the amount of the 2023 excess payment. I did not fund HSA in 2024.

This happens because TurboTax is confused on why you have an 8889 but did not report any HDHP coverage.

Just enter in the Review that you have Self-only coverage. It won't matter because all the numbers on the 8889 are correct since you did not report any HDHP coverage.

Does one have to select "Self only" or selecting "Family" is OK as well?  I selected "Family" and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to go back and select "Self only" at this point in TurboTax 🙂

Thank you

Selecting either Self-only or Family is fine. Either one will get you around this situation in the Review. The important thing is that you indicated that you had no HDHP coverage for the year.
