I had a small business in 2016; very little money yet many expenses such as rent. If I itemize, will I be able to carry over the losses to future years? if yes, how many

Your small business expenses will be reported on Schedule C, not taken as itemized deductions on Schedule A.

Since you will be reporting these on Schedule C, all losses will be deductible on your 2016 income tax return and will be used to reduce your total income this year.

The easiest way to get to your Schedule C to report these expenses is to Jump:

  • Click on Search at the top of the screen
  • Type "Schedule C' in the box and hit Enter
  • The first item in the results should be Jump to schedule c - click on this and you will be taken to the input screens
  • Walk through all the screens to input all of your business income and expense items.
