I donated $1000 to my college's annual fund. Can I deduct it?
Yes. You can deduct your contribution if it was made to an organization that is eligible to receive tax deductible donations and if you meet the requirements to itemize your deductions.
According to page 2 of Pub 526, under the heading, "table 1: examples of charitable contributions", it says that you can deduct contributions made to nonprofit schools. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf
However this publication does not provide a listing of specific organizations that can receive tax deductible contributions. Here is an IRS link that allows you to search for your organization to see if it is an organization that can receive tax deductible contributions. https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-select-check
In order to deduct charitable contributions you would need to qualify to itemize your deductions. To
itemize your deductions, you would have to have personal expenses such as
medical and dental expenses, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, unreimbursed
job expenses and certain miscellaneous expenses, and charitable contributions
that when combined together, total more than your standard deduction. For
example if you file single, your standard deduction is $6300 so you would have
to have personal expenses that total more than $6300.
