i don't know .. i do not have any children.  I do claim my 96 year old mother as a dependent

If you claimed your mother as your dependent you are getting the $500 credit for other dependents for her.

The Other Dependent $500 credit is for any qualified person who is age 17 or older and you are claiming them as a dependent
