This is for the Windows Desktop deluxe version.
Workaround - Go to Step by Step Federal Deductions and Credits. Update the charitable contributions. It will take you to a place where it gives the standard deduction. It lists the total charity donations. Only cash and cost of travel, supplies etc are deductible if you take the standard deduction. Non cash items like clothes are only deductible if you itemize deductions. Accept the standard deduction and it will change the 1040 line 10B and update the refund or lower the amount of tax owed.
I haven't been able to get it to work if I make the entries directly on the charitable donations forms. It doesn't carry over any changes from the forms to the 1040 unless I am in Step by Step.
I have experienced the same problem where changing the cash charitable contributions using step-by-step does not carry forward into form 1040 line 10b. The above workaround does not work for me. Have talked with TT tech support and they are investigating.
I have been able to enter and change the charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions.
In TurboTax Desktop follow these steps:
But, I already entered my cash contributions during the interview process and TurboTax handled putting the correct amount on form 1040 lines 10b/10c. Problem is, when I go back and change the amount of cash contributions via the interview process, the new amounts don't appear on lines 10b/10c as they should.
Hi,
Please see the last line of my workaround comment:
I haven't been able to get it to work if I make the entries directly on the charitable donations forms. It doesn't carry over any changes from the forms to the 1040 unless I am in Step by Step.
Please explain why it won't work if I enter the charity contributions from the forms view. When I revise the charity on forms view the revision only changes Schedule A. It only changes the 1040 using Step by Step.
Additionally, when I save the return, close and then reopen TurboTax, it is not saving the $300 entered using Step by Step. Instead it reverts to the figures which I entered when I first started the return. Can you please try to recreate the problems I am having in your test system or please let me know if you want me to send you the return so you can work on these issues with the Turbotax Deluxe Windows desktop version.
I would appreciate not closing this case until someone can explain why revisions to charity entered on the Forms view are not carrying over to the 1040 line 10B and why revision entered on Step by Step are not kept on the return once I exit Turbotax.
One last thing. Maybe I am missing something, but it takes me a lot of time to find this case that I entered. Searching on the case number or my userid does not work. Is there a way to quickly get to this case?

If you're using TurboTax online, the contribution must first be dealt with on the Schedule A contribution worksheet. It won't work through the 1040 worksheet, even though you need to get the cash onto line 10b of the 1040, and even if you are not going to itemize. Here's what to do:
By following these steps, TurboTax should automatically assume that you are taking the standard deduction instead of itemizing. Then it will ask you to enter the cash amount of the contribution, which is 1040 line 10b.
Line 10b
If you don't itemize deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040), you (or you and your spouse if filing jointly) may be able to take a charitable deduction for cash contributions made in 2020.
