I am Married and I am comparing Married filing jointly with Married filing separately

I completed our taxes for married filing jointly and I started the process for married filing separately. I completed my married filing separately return then went on to my wife's return. In my return I itemized my deductions. For some reason Turbo Tax won't itemize my wife's return. I have tried to override this but I am unable to do this. Turbo Tax even asked if I had itemized my return at the beginning of starting her return. This seems to be a bug in Turbo Tax and I can't figure out how to contact Turbo Tax to fix this.

The steps for preparing test returns for the purpose of comparing married filing joint and married filing separate are different in TurboTax Online and TurboTax Desktop/Download.

Please see here for the Desktop/Download steps.

To prepare test returns in TurboTax Online, In TurboTax Online, you'll need to create a test account separate from your regular TurboTax account and create a test return there. We recommend adding "test" or similar to your user ID so you can easily distinguish it from your actual account.

If you have set up separate returns using separate TurboTax Online accounts, or following the steps for the Desktop/Download version saving the data files with separate file names, then you should be able to both itemize on the separate returns.

Click here for more information about filing jointly versus separately.

Click here for tax tips for community property states. If you live in a community property state (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin), you will need to divide your community income according to the rules of your state.

See here for more information if you later decide to contact TurboTax directly.

Wow, that did not address the question at all. Generic response. Thanks for nothing.

Can you try the steps provided below to see if that resolves your issue:

  • Log completely out of your TurboTax account
  • Clear cache and delete cookies
  • Then log back in and see if you are still having the same issue

If you are using the Desktop version of TurboTax, you can try to update the program and then try again. If that does not work, I would suggest reaching out to TurboTax Customer Support for assistance.
