Specifically, can the deductible we paid be claimed as a medical deduction?

Yes, the deductible is a medical expense if paid with out of pocket funds and was not reimbursed.

Yes, based on the information you provided, the $6,000 qualifies as a medical expense. Medical expenses can be deducted on Schedule A, but only to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

Per IRS Publication 502, "Medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body. These expenses include payments for legal medical services rendered by physicians, surgeons, dentists, and other medical practitioners. They include the costs of equipment, supplies, and diagnostic devices needed for these purposes."
