How would I check to see if I claimed the first-time homebuyer credit in 2008?

If you took the first time homebuyer credit in 2008, you would have started repaying it on your 2010 tax return. You can go here https://www.irs.gov/individuals/first-time-homebuyer-credit-account-look-up and it will allow to see if you received the credit and show you the total amount of the credit you received if you got the credit as well. This link will also let you check your account to see your balance and the amount you have paid to date.

NOTE: If you have a copy of your returns starting from 2010, you can check to see if Form 5405 is included. That signifies if you took the credit as well. Form 5405: Repayment of the First-Time Homebuyer Credit figures the repayment amount (actually, an additional tax) for the 2008 First-Time Homebuyer Credit.

If you did take it and need to repay on your current return, you can use steps below to jump to that section of the return.

You can jump right to that section by using these steps.

  • Type homebuyer credit in the Search box in top right
  • Click jump to homebuyer credit and answer Yes and follow the prompts.

The software will do the calculations for you.
