how to determine value of donation

I donated my car's engine and transmission to a high school automotive class for them to use.  How do I determine its value? I have a letter of acknowledgement of the receipt of my engine from the school.

You could ask the school or a salvage yard. 

The donation won't matter unless you are able to claim Itemized Deductions.

If you don't have enough to claim Itemized Deductions, and claim the Standard Deduction instead, the donation is not counted.
