My son turned 18 in 2022. He lived with us all year. When he was completing his return he indicated that nobody would claim him as a dependent. I was unaware of this.
I claimed him as a dependent on our taxes and the IRS rejected our e-file because of that.
Since this would make an $850 difference on our taxes, but zero on his taxes, I had him file an amended return changing his to show someone will claim him as a dependent, and he e-filed the amendment.
How long do I need to wait before attempting to e-file our return again?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will not be able to e-file your 2022 tax return even after the amended return is processed by the IRS. Once the SS number on an e-filed return is accepted by the IRS for the current tax year, it is not removed from the IRS data base for the current tax year.
You need to print, sign, date and mail your tax return to the IRS. Include with the return any forms you received that have taxes withheld, W-2's and Form 1099's.
You should not wait as the IRS may take six to eight weeks to process your son's amended return.
You should claim him as a dependent, print out your return, sign it and mail it.
Please follow the instructions in this TurboTax article to switch from e-file to File by mail.
Ok I will do that.
Any chance I can get my $25 back that I paid for state e-file?

Yes, contact TurboTax support and they can either cancel the payment or issue a refund of the $25 e-file fee for the state return. Use the key words Billing Issue when contacting support.
