How does TT calculate "amount required to be used for other than qualified education expenses, item 4 part V Student Information Worksheet? I can NOT find the data source for this and I have tried every conceivable combination of numbers to derive it.

I reworded an earlier post that went unanswered.  This effects other taxable income schedule 1, line 8r and educational credits.

Yes, the amount in that box is the amount you entered as spent on room & board on the screen titled, Did you pay for room and board with a scholarship or grant?

Room & board is not a qualified education expense, but it can be used to exclude excess scholarships from taxable income.

I figured it out!  This amount comes from the step-by-step education scholarship/grants topic, " Did you pay for room and Board with a Scholarship or Grant? If you answer "no" here, then item 4 is 0.
