EVENTUALLY the IRS may open that part of the portal which will allow you to add a child but if it never happens you will just get the credit on the 2021 return ...

@arthur.rob87 You say the child "just" returned home-----we do not know how to interpret that. This is mid-August. In order to claim the child for 2021 the child needs to live with you for at least half the year in 2021. If the child meets the criteria to be claimed as a dependent for 2021 then you can get the child tax credit when you file your 2021 tax return in 2022.
