Where do I put the installation costs of a generator in a rental unit?

You would add the cost of the generator to the installation cost and enter the total in the Assets/Depreciation section on the screen that says Review Your (name of property) Rental Summary. You will see that screen after you enter your basic rental information:

You would choose Rental Real Estate Property as the description of the asset, then Appliances, carpet and furniture as the category of the asset:
